Start with a useful picture

An AI assistant works with the information and instructions you give it to produce a response. You might ask it to explain an unfamiliar term, suggest an outline, compare approaches, or help you rewrite a message. The response can give you a starting point, but it does not know your full situation simply because it sounds fluent.

Try a modest task first. Ask for three ways to explain an idea to a friend. Read the options. Keep what fits, change what does not, and check any factual claim before repeating it.

Your part of the work

Tell the assistant what you are trying to do and who the answer is for. Leave out private information you do not have permission to share. If an answer matters to health, money, safety, legal rights, or another consequential choice, use an appropriate qualified source or person before acting.

A good first question is not a test of whether you can write a perfect prompt. It is the beginning of a conversation in which you can ask, inspect, correct, and decide.
